Satellite TV Networks

Currently, there are two satellite TV networks that provide satellite television services to United States residents: DirecTV and DISH network. While DISH network has been in business for a longer period and has constantly improved its services, DirecTV is also a very fast growing company gaining more and more popularity.

DirecTV

DirecTV is a digital-quality satellite TV network. The programming in transmitted from a satellite directly to the dish in your house. Both picture and sound are a lot better than for cable TV. They also have a wider range of programming channels. DirecTV offers over 225 channels and the consumer can choose between several programming packages.

DISH Network

DISH network is part of EchoStar Communications Corporation, along with two other interrelated business units: EchoStar Technologies and EchoStar Satellite Services. EchoStar Technologies manufactures the decoders that this satellite TV network is using. EchoStar Satellite Services offers the video, audio and data delivery services to customers.

What is the best satellite TV service

You can argue all day on which satellite TV service is the best but it’s all an opinion. It all depends on how much money you are willing to spend on TV’s and a satellite service. Certain packages you buy will require a more high definition TV so you may receive all of the channels they provide. There are many different combinations of satellite TV services but we will go through all the basic packages and not the add-ons to save some time.

Satellite TV Providers

Satellite TV first came to the United States in the early 80s and at first there were several more satellite TV providers but today there are mainly two, Dish Network and DirecTV. Sky Angel is also a Satellite TV provider that specializes in Christian and family friendly broadcasting. Although Sky Angel is independent of Dish Network, they do have an agreement with Dish Network whereby each of their respective customers can receive the other company’s programming using the same equipment.

DISH NETWORK

Dish Network is owned by Echostar, which is headquartered in Colorado and has been providing satellite service since the 80s. By 2003 Dish Network was providing satellite TV service to 5 million United States households and in that same year formed a partnership with SBC communications to offer SBC Dish Network television service. In 2005 Dish Network added the Voom programming after purchasing Voom’s satellite.

DirecTV

DirecTV, Dish Network’s competitor, boasts 15 million customers in the United States and over 1.5 million customers in Latin America. DirecTV launched its first satellite in 1994 by Hughes Electronics and in 2003 was sold to News Corporation.
